Negli Stati Uniti è solito per le donne cambiare il proprio cognome con quello del marito dopo il matrimonio e trasmettere ai figli il cognome del padre.
È però anche possibile chiamare il figlio con il cognome della madre, oppure aggiungerlo e anteporlo al cognome paterno.
In solo sette stati americani è permesso ad un uomo sostituire il proprio cognome con quello della moglie senza passare attraverso il laborioso e costoso processo giuridico stabilito dai giudici per un qualsiasi cambio di nome.
